Twenty-seven teams from across the state attended the Garrison speech meet. Eight students represented Burke Central! Congratulations to Fernanda for placing 7th in Poetry and Pauline for taking 8th in Speech to Entertain. Others attending: Taryn, Izik, Kal'el, Addie, Sakara, and Dakota. Next meet: Westhope on Mar. 11!

First Grade Mystery Reader Day 1

Interesting facts about Dr. Seuss:
1. Theodor Seuss Geisel, popularly known as Dr Seuss, wasn't a real doctor. Instead he used the honorific "Dr" in order to appease his father who expected him to study medicine.
2. He used the name “Dr. Seuss” by 1928. Geisel had an alternate pen name that he also wrote under which was Theo LeSieg. LeSieg is Geisel spelled backwards.
3. He wrote and illustrated 47 children's books before his death.
4. First child's book to be written was "And to Think I saw it on Mulberry Street" in 1937. It was rejected 27 times before published.
5. "Green Eggs and Ham" was written on a bet by his publisher. Dr. Seuss was challenged to write a book that doesn't exceed 50 words. Dr. Seuss won.
